Beverley

One can only stand in awe at this beautiful place of worship - Beverley Minster, it was founded in 700 AD, although the current building dates back to 1220. The Minster was rebuilt after burning down and was completed after 160 years of work, in 1395. It is acclaimed as one of the greatest gothic churches in Europe.

John of Beverley, Bishop of Hexham, then of York, retired here to join an already existing religious
community in the C7th. His famous works of healing include restoring speech to a deaf boy.
Saint John is the patron saint of the deaf and dumb.

For centuries pilgrims have visited Saint John's shrine, which was one of the most renowned in
England. Humble folk came to pray for healing; kings to give thanks for victory in battle. Meanwhile the
canons of the Minster continued their daily offering of worship and prayer, morning and evening.

Beverley Minster

The Borough of Beverley and surrounding area covers 150 square miles of charming town and countryside with quaint villages, historic towns, a lovingly restored working windmill, Europe's largest collection of water lilies and one of Europe's best clay pigeon shoots. It also boasts Britain's largest museum of Army Transport, the famous Hull Truck theatre company, a national racecourse and a variety of internationally recognised arts festivals. It is like a smaller model of York.

Not to be overlooked is the Beverley Friary. These restored buildings are the only remaining example of a Dominican Friary in the region. Medieval interior paintings and interesting murals are obvious intrigues. Many famous names are associated with the town. One such is the 19th and 20th century local artist Frederick Elwell RA. Some of his paintings are part of a permanent collection at Beverley's art gallery. His home of some 40 years, Bar House, is still standing today.
